About GC Tech

As a student at GC Tech, you have the opportunity to earn high school credits while gaining valuable career and technical skills. Many GC Tech programs have been approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to include English language arts (ELA), mathematics and science content that may count toward graduation requirements. The two-year program is worth up to eight high school credits. How these credits are applied toward graduation is determined by each student's home school district, which may choose to award elective credits, academic credits or a combination of both. We encourage students and families to speak with their school counselor to understand how GC Tech credits will apply toward their graduation plan.

If these academic credits are used to meet graduation requirements, CTE credits will be proportionately reduced. For example, if 1.0 credit is applied to English, the total CTE credit is reduced from 4.0 to 3.0. For more information, contact our Guidance Department at 516-604-4258.

• SkillsUSA: This national student organization helps students develop leadership skills through involvement in a wide variety of activities and competitions.
• National Technical Honor Society (NTHS): Membership in the NTHS, America's highest award for excellence in career and technical education, is based on academic achievement, community service and teacher recommendations.
• Honor Roll: Students with an average of 90% or higher can be eligible for Honor Roll. Honor Roll students with a 95% average can earn High Honor Roll status.
• Student of the Quarter: Our Students of the Quarter are considered for the Outstanding Student Award, presented at the Certificate Ceremony.
• George Farber Outstanding Student Award: One student of excellence from every Nassau BOCES school is chosen each year to receive the George Farber Award, named after our late board president.
• Career-Specific Awards and Scholarships: Many business councils, professional organizations and employers offer awards and scholarships to students who excel while at GC Tech.
• Student Ambassadors: Students who, through their performance in the classroom and workplace, exemplify success are invited to serve as Student Ambassadors, sharing their GC Tech experiences with incoming students and serving as guides at orientation and Taste of Tech.
• No Place for Hate: GC Tech is recognized by the Anti-Defamation League as an approved No Place for Hate school. This is a self-directed program that helps all GC Tech stakeholders take the lead on improving and maintaining school climate so all students can thrive.

The agency encourages the involvement of staff, students, parents and community members in the implementation and reinforcement of the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). If you believe you or someone else has been the target of harassment, bullying, cyberbullying and/or discrimination, please complete a DASA Incident Reporting Form and return it to a school administrator or Dignity Act coordinator. All complaints will be treated in a confidential manner. Anonymous reports may limit the district's ability to respond to the complaint. A prompt and thorough investigation will be conducted for all incident reports.

Students and their families do not pay tuition. However, the purchase of individual equipment, work clothes and/or materials may be required for a particular course. Any purchase made is the property of the student and can be used in an employment situation after graduation. Students and Parents receive information in their acceptance letter with details about an orientation meeting in August.

The New York State Board of Regents has approved a new pathway for graduation for high school students. Students can now complete four required Regents exams and substitute the fifth social studies exam with a Career and Technical Education-approved exam.

• The CTE program must be at least three credits in length and meet all New York State Education Department requirements for a CTE course to offer credit.
• All GC Tech CTE courses meet New York state requirements to be approved for high school credits.
• Nassau BOCES will publish an addendum to this catalog when the New York State Education Department has finalized the exams required for each course to fulfill the Regents exam substitution.
  • Courses that use the required exam will satisfy the 4+1 graduation requirement for the new CTE pathway.
  • Although all GC Tech CTE courses culminate in a CTE/SED-approved industry assessment, not all are approved at this time for the 4+1 graduation pathway. Approval for Hospitality and Tourism is pending final approval from NYSED (anticipated in spring 2025 for the 2025-26 school year).
